The Washington Redskins had a lot going on this week, and now the team is dealing with a social media controversy involving the wife of general manager Scot McCloughan.
On Sunday, Jessica McCloughan sent tweets to ESPN reporter Dianna Russini that were widely described as vulgar. The tweets came after Russini reported on her own Twitter account that the Redskins might change quarterbacks, a report that was confirmed the next day. In the tweets, McCloughan insinuated that Russini had traded favors for the story. No evidence was offered to support that claim.
According to reports, it was not the first time. A similar tweet from the account was said to have been sent in August, again suggesting improper behavior by Russini with people connected to the team. After the latest tweet spread online, the account was deleted.
At first, the Redskins reportedly said the tweets did not come from McCloughan’s real account. On Wednesday she acknowledged the tweets were hers and apologized through the team.
ESPN also responded. In a statement the network said: “Dianna is an excellent reporter who should never have to be subjected to such vulgar comments. We are obviously extremely disappointed by today’s developments.”
