A Portland, Oregon woman has been charged with bias crimes after prosecutors say she pulled the hijab off a Saudi Arabian college student and tried to choke her with it.
According to NBC News, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office said Jasmine, 23, allegedly took the hijab from the head of a 24 year old Portland State University exchange student at a transit stop on November 12, 2019. The DA’s office also cited court documents alleging further offensive conduct involving the hijab.
Prosecutors said Jasmine was charged with two counts of bias crime, one count of attempted strangulation, one count of harassment, and one count of criminal mischief.
The DA’s office said a warrant was issued for her arrest after she did not appear in court on Friday, January 3, 2020. The charges are allegations, and Jasmine has not been convicted of anything.
