A 19-year-old woman was fatally shot by a Michigan police officer Saturday after exchanging gunfire near a Juneteenth parade.
The unidentified woman was taken to a hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. CNN reports that the officer was not injured during the incident.
“Preliminary investigation indicates the officer, who was working a traffic point for the Juneteenth Celebration Parade, was fired upon by the lone occupant of a vehicle who drove up to him at the traffic point. Upon taking fire, the officer returned fire, striking the suspect,” said the Michigan State Police in a statement.
NBC reviewed cell phone footage verified by police that confirms the officer was shot at by the occupant of a car. The officer is seen pointing a handgun at the vehicle, saying, “Let me see your hands. Hands up,” before firing.
The shooting took place in Flint near the Juneteenth Champions Parade. The State Police are investigating at the request of the Flint Police Department, according to CNN.
