A woman was shot and killed on August 8 after driving to Spokane, Washington, to pick up her children from their father, according to court documents and news reports.
Mary went to collect her kids after they spent the summer with their dad. Later that day she was found shot in her car outside her former husband’s apartment, police and court documents say.
Her former husband, Nathan, was charged in the case. Mary’s family told reporters that he had threatened her life in the past and that years earlier he said she “needed to be shot.” Court documents say Mary planned to meet him in a public setting and was texting her boyfriend in case things went wrong. Her boyfriend had planned to go with her but was called into work.
BuzzFeed News reported that Mary’s family said she asked police to escort her to the apartment building and that officers declined, explaining that they do not get involved in family law matters. Spokane police later said they were unaware of any such request.
Around noon, Mary told her boyfriend and a sibling that she had arrived, then stopped responding. According to BuzzFeed News, a 911 caller reported a woman slumped over in a car hours later, and police found a gunshot wound to her head.
Nathan has pleaded not guilty, and his bail was set at $1 million. The charge is an allegation, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Her family remembers Mary as a kind and caring person who loved her children.
