After taking a COVID test midflight, a Michigan school teacher was forced to isolate herself for about five hours in an airplane bathroom.

“There’s 150 people on the flight, and my biggest fear was giving it to them,” Marisa Fotieo told NBC’s “Today” show.

After her throat began to hurt on a flight from Chicago to Reykjavik, Iceland, on December 20, Fotieo took a rapid test.

“Within what felt like two seconds there were two lines,” indicating a positive result, Fotieo told NBC.

She then took to TikTok to capture her self-isolation in the restroom. She stated she stayed for five hours, which was the majority of the six-hour ride between the two cities.

According to Fotieo, an Icelandair flight attendant named Ragnhildur “Rocky” Eirksdóttir turned the experience into a “VIP quarantine.”

“She made sure I had everything I needed for the next five hours from food to drinks and constantly checked on me assuring me I would be all right,” Fotieo told NBC.

Fotieo did not specify how recently she had tested negative prior to traveling.
A negative test, either a PCR or a rapid test, must be taken within 72 hours of departure in Iceland.

According to a video shared by Fotieo on Friday, she took a PCR test that came back negative.

When the flight landed, Eirksdóttir’s still made sure Fotieo was ok.

Fotieo received a delivery from Eirksdóttir after being confined in a hotel in Reykjavik.

“She bought me flowers and a little Christmas tree with lights so I could hang it,” Fotieo told NBC. “It was so heartfelt, and she’s just an angel.”

“We stan Rocky,” Fotieo said.
On December 29, Fotieo was still reporting from Iceland’s quarantine hotel. Iceland mandates ten-day quarantines for people with COVID-19.
