A woman who says she spent five months getting to know JaVale McGee says that when he finally flew her out to see him, he wasn’t interested in anything but sex.
She told her story in a first person account on Black Sports Online, then reached out to Baller Alert directly to explain why she shared it. She says she isn’t looking for money. She wants other women to learn from what happened to her.
According to her, it started like a lot of these stories do, with DMs on Twitter. The messages turned into texts and then Skype calls. She says the Denver Nuggets center was sweet, asked about her grandmother and even drew a picture of her. She says she checked on him after games and made sure he got home safe after nights out. She turned down his invitations to visit for months because she had read enough groupie stories to be careful.
After five months, she agreed to fly to Denver in August. She says it went downhill as soon as she got there. They had sex, but after that he was cold. She says he slept on the couch, left early for practice, never took her anywhere and refused to go out because it was “too hot.” At one point, she says, he came back with Chipotle for himself and nothing for her. When she told him she wasn’t a jump off, she says he got her a separate room. McGee has not responded to her story.
She admits she made mistakes too. Her advice to other women is to weigh the pros and cons of getting involved with an athlete, and to make him show he cares with actions, not words.
We’ll add this. Five months of DMs and Skype calls is not long enough to know a man, and it’s definitely not long enough to know if you’re the only one he’s talking to. A plane ticket is nothing to a baller. His time is what tells you where you stand. If he won’t give you that, believe what he’s showing you.
