The white Florida woman who fatally shot a Black neighbor for knocking on her door had called the victim’s children racist names.
Susan Louise Lorincz is facing manslaughter charges for shooting through her door and killing Ajike Owens in Ocala. As more is being learned about the murder, it becomes clear that it was likely racially motivated. Lorincz admitted to law enforcement that she called Owens’ children the “n-word.” One of the kids also told authorities that Lorincz called them a “Black slave” for playing too close to her rental home. Lorincz claimed the victim’s children had been causing issues with her for about two years. Since January 2021, deputies have responded to at least six complaints between Owens and Lorincz.
The shooting has rocked the country, leaving questions surrounding Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law, though authorities have confirmed that the self-defense bill does not apply to this case. On June 2nd, the day of the shooting, Lorincz threw a pair of skates at the kids who were playing in a grassy area near her house. One of the skates hit Owens’ child on the foot, resulting in the mother going to Lorincz’s house to confront her. Once Owens’ knocked on the door, she was shot. One of Owens’ kids was standing beside her but was not harmed by the gunfire.
In addition to manslaughter, Lorincz has also been charged with culpable negligence, battery, and two counts of assault. Her bond has been set at $154,000. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump is now representing Owens’ family.
