Chris Brown just lost one of the most brutal civil trials of his career, and the details are as disturbing as the verdict is large.
A Los Angeles jury ruled on Tuesday that Chris Brown must pay nearly $13 million to Maria Avila, a former housekeeper who was mauled and permanently disfigured by a dog at his Tarzana home in 2020. Jurors found Brown and his company Black Pyramid LLC liable for negligence and awarded Avila $12.9 million. Her sister Patricia, who was working alongside her that day, received $885,000 for emotional distress, and Maria’s husband Oscar Olivo was awarded another $50,000.
The attack happened on December 12, 2020. Maria was emptying trash outside the home when Hades, a 200 pound Caucasian shepherd, went after her without warning. That breed is enormous and aggressive, known for being used as guard dogs at Russian prisons, and the damage it did was severe. Avila needed emergency surgery. Surgeons harvested skin from her abdomen to graft onto her arm, the lacerations to her face required dozens of sutures, and she spent five days in the hospital alone because pandemic rules barred visitors.
Years later, Avila told the jury the attack changed her life for good. “I will never be the same again,” she testified. She described permanent disfigurement, nerve damage, vision loss, and post traumatic stress. Her daughter testified that the spark went out of her mother, that she no longer likes going out in public or being photographed because she does not want people to see her face. For a woman whose work as a housekeeper often put her in homes with dogs, the fear alone has made returning to her job nearly impossible.
Chris Brown’s defense leaned on a technicality that did not move the jury. He testified that Hades was not his personal pet but rather a security dog bought and cared for by his guards to protect the property from break ins. “I get a lot of stalker type situations,” he told the court. The bigger problem was what he did after the mauling. According to the plaintiffs, Brown did not call 911 or stay to help. He left the scene and drove around for hours, later explaining that he feared a media circus if his voice ended up on the emergency call or if he was present when police arrived. He denied fleeing to avoid responsibility, though he acknowledged there had been a lot of blood.
This is the second time the case reached a jury. Chris Brown originally faced a $90 million lawsuit that Avila and her family filed in 2021. The first trial ended in a mistrial in June after a juror was caught searching the internet about the case and sharing what he found, which forced the judge to throw out the panel and start over. Brown had already conceded partial responsibility before the retrial began, but he still fought the scale of the damages, and the new jury landed on nearly $13 million anyway.
The timing is what makes this hit even harder. The verdict against Chris Brown arrived just days after he kicked off the Raymond and Brown Tour, a stadium run he is headlining alongside Usher across the country this summer, including two nights at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles in September. So while he is filling arenas and moving like his year is going perfectly, a jury in Van Nuys was deciding that he owes a disfigured woman millions for an attack he spent years fighting.
It is worth noting what the jury was not allowed to hear. The judge barred any mention of Brown’s 2009 felony assault of Rihanna, ruling it was not relevant to a dog mauling case. Several potential jurors were dismissed after saying they could not be impartial because they knew his history. Even without that context in the room, the panel still ruled decisively against him, based on the facts of what happened to Maria Avila and how he responded to it.
For Avila’s legal team, the win was about more than money. Her attorney said that after more than five years of fighting Chris Brown in court, they were thrilled to finally get justice for their client and her family after everything they went through on that horrible day. The number is significant, but so is the simple acknowledgment that a working woman who showed up to do her job and left with lifelong scars was owed something for it.
Chris Brown has not publicly addressed the verdict, and his representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment. He continues on tour with Usher regardless, playing to packed stadiums each night. The contrast is impossible to miss. One of the biggest names in R&B is having one of the biggest tours of the summer, and in the same week, a jury put a price on the harm his dog did to a woman who was simply taking out the trash.
