Ye says his wife, Bianca Censori, is the reason for his current stable mental state.
In a new interview, the artist formerly known as Kanye West opened up about how Censori helped him recognize a dangerous shift in his cognitive health and pushed him toward treatment after what he described as a breaking point. Speaking with Vanity Fair, Ye said a change in medication toward the end of a four-month manic episode led to an unexpected crash.
“Toward the end of my four-month-long manic episode, my medication was changed. In that shift, the antipsychotic drug took me into a really deep depressive episode,” he explained.
According to Ye, Censori immediately noticed something was wrong.
“My wife recognized that, and we sought out what’s been effective and stabilizing course correction in my regime from a rehab facility in Switzerland,” he said, crediting her awareness for helping him regain balance.
During the interview, Ye also addressed the apology he recently published in The Wall Street Journal, rejecting claims that it was done to protect his career. “
This is because these remorseful feelings were so heavy on my heart and weighing on my spirit,” he said. “I owe a huge apology once again for everything that I said that hurt the Jewish and Black communities in particular. All of it went too far. I look at wreckage of my episode and realize that this isn’t who I am.”
He emphasized that bipolar disorder played a central role in his actions, stating, “You must understand bipolar is a disease. It’s one of the most lethal nonterminal illnesses.”
In his written apology, Ye reflected on years of damage caused by ignoring treatment. “Things got worse the longer I ignored the problem. I said and did things I deeply regret,” he wrote, adding, “I regret and am deeply mortified by my actions in that state, and am committed to accountability, treatment, and meaningful change.”
For Ye, he says stability now comes from accountability, treatment, and the person who recognized his lowest moment before he could.
