YG’s Thursday morning took a serious turn before he could make it anywhere near a Verzuz stage. The Compton rapper was detained while authorities executed a search warrant connected to the Drakeo the Ruler murder investigation at a Burbank-area property linked to YG. The YG detention ended without an arrest, but the search marks a significant new development in a homicide case that has remained unsolved for more than four years.
A SWAT team responded to the property around 7 a.m. Pacific time on Thursday, July 23. The California Highway Patrol reportedly led the operation, while Burbank SWAT officers assisted. A Burbank Police Department watch commander confirmed that YG was detained during the response and later released. A CHP official also stressed that the rapper was not arrested.
Authorities have not publicly identified YG as a suspect, announced any charges against him or explained what investigators expected to recover during the search. A detention during the execution of a warrant also does not establish criminal involvement. Officers routinely secure and temporarily detain people at a location while conducting a court-authorized search.
Still, the connection to Drakeo’s killing immediately reopened one of the most painful and controversial chapters in Los Angeles rap.
Drakeo the Ruler, whose legal name was Darrell Caldwell, was fatally stabbed backstage at the Once Upon a Time in LA festival on December 18, 2021. He was rushed to California Hospital Medical Center and pronounced dead several hours later. He was 28-years-old. The California Highway Patrol took over the homicide investigation because the attack occurred on property under the agency’s jurisdiction.
Video from the backstage area showed a large group overwhelming Drakeo and members of his entourage. A CHP report later stated that one attacker used an “edged weapon” to stab Drakeo in the neck. Witnesses and members of his team also raised questions about how so many people reached the restricted area and why security appeared unable to stop the attack.
Drakeo’s mother, Darrylene Corniel, described the devastation of seeing her son after the attack.
“He was hit in his neck. I saw him when I went to the hospital. They said it’s a homicide, so I wasn’t able to hug him or kiss him or anything like that. I had to look at him through a window,” she said following his death.
Corniel made her intentions just as clear when discussing the investigation.
“I do want justice for my son. And I do believe that justice will be served.”
YG’s name has followed the Drakeo case because the two rappers had a documented conflict before the killing, and both artists were connected to the festival where Drakeo died.
Drakeo had spent years clashing with rappers and alleged gang affiliates from Inglewood. Some of that hostility traced back to a 2016 shooting that killed Davion Gregory, a man prosecutors identified as affiliated with the Inglewood Family Gangster Bloods. Prosecutors accused Drakeo of responsibility for that killing, but a jury acquitted him of murder and attempted murder charges in 2019. He later accepted a plea agreement on remaining counts and left jail in November 2020.
After his release, Drakeo continued addressing his enemies through interviews, social media posts and records, including the Inglewood-targeted song “IngleWeird.” The public conflict eventually expanded to include YG, one of Compton’s most prominent Blood-affiliated rappers.
That history gained more attention because YG was scheduled to perform at Once Upon a Time in LA on the same night Drakeo was attacked. Drakeo’s family publicly alleged that the large group confrontation unfolded around the time YG and his entourage arrived backstage. Those claims fueled years of internet speculation, but they did not result in charges against YG.
No publicly released evidence has established that YG ordered, participated in or knew in advance about Drakeo’s killing. He has repeatedly denied involvement, including through his 2026 song “We Know the Truth,” which directly pushed back against rumors tying him to the murder. Reports covering the record also noted that YG had never been charged in connection with Drakeo’s death.
That distinction matters. A public feud explains why YG became part of the conversation, but a feud is not proof of a homicide conspiracy.
Thursday’s search does, however, show that investigators are still actively pursuing information connected to Drakeo’s death. The fact that authorities secured a warrant for a property associated with YG will naturally intensify scrutiny, especially after years without an arrest.
The timing added another layer to an already chaotic morning. YG was scheduled to face The Game in the “Compton Forever” Verzuz battle Thursday evening. The event was promoted for 6:30 p.m. Pacific time, leaving only hours between YG’s release and one of the biggest West Coast rap events of the year.
YG has previously encountered police in Burbank. In October 2024, he was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor driving under the influence after officers reportedly found him near a vehicle that had gone over a curb. That case is unrelated to the Drakeo investigation.
For now, the confirmed facts remain narrow but serious. Police searched a property connected to YG under a warrant tied to Drakeo the Ruler’s murder. Officers detained YG during the operation, released him and did not announce an arrest.
Authorities have not disclosed what they seized, what prompted the warrant or whether the search will lead to charges against anyone.
