A Texas family is planning a funeral instead of celebrating Christmas after a deadly crash in the Houston area. According to ABC13 and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, 23 year old Taylor was killed when a 19 year old driver named Erick allegedly crossed several lanes of traffic and hit her SUV. Taylor’s mother and her one year old son, Mason, were also in the vehicle.
Prosecutors say video from inside a bar shows Erick drinking 12 alcoholic beverages, including tequila shots, over about six hours, and that he was not asked for identification even though he was under the legal drinking age. Five bar employees, four bartenders and one manager, were arrested for allegedly serving him. Court documents cited by prosecutors state the bar did not have a liquor license and was only permitted to serve beer and wine.
Sean Teare, chief of the Vehicular Crimes Division in the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, said the crash happened about a minute after Erick left the bar and noted that six people in total were charged in connection with the case.
Taylor’s mother, Carmen, told ABC13 the family was returning from a weekend visiting relatives in New Orleans and was about five minutes from home when the crash happened. She said passersby were slow to stop and that it took several men to help free Mason after the collision.
Erick has been charged with intoxication manslaughter and was released on a $30,000 bond, according to reports at the time. The charges are allegations and the cases had not been decided. A GoFundMe was set up to help support Mason.
