Young Thug’s rise to fame and YSL’s RICO case will be the subject of a documentary and a podcast, Variety reports.
Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions and Rolling Stone Films announced the project on Friday, though not much else is known. A title for the series, as well as a director, are still unknown.
The docuseries will focus on Young Thug, the “larger Atlanta hip-hop boom,” and the RICO case against YSL. The series aims to take a deep dive into the practice of prosecutors using rap lyrics as evidence of criminal activity against rappers.
“Jigsaw is thrilled to partner with the formidable team at Rolling Stone to explore Young Thug and YSL Records’ story in a style that is both absorbing and journalistically rigorous,” said Jigsaw’s Stacey Offman. “It’s an intriguing narrative with engaging characters and enormous First Amendment consequences when song lyrics are applied in a criminal indictment.”
The doc doesn’t shy away from the fact that the criminal case against Young Thug and his YSL associates is still ongoing. Instead, the project will capture the story as it “unfolds in real-time.
Young Thug and Gunna remain behind bars as they have been denied bond. Thugger is facing a count of conspiring to violate the RICO Act and one count of participation in criminal street gang activity, along with seven other felonies.
Gunna, accused of being a high-ranking official in Young Thug’s alleged criminal empire, has been charged with one count of conspiracy to violate the RICO Act.
