Yak Gotti has finally regained his freedom following the lengthy YSL trial.
After months behind bars, even after a not guilty verdict, the Atlanta rapper, born Deamonte Kendrick, is finally headed home. On Tuesday, Kendrick appeared in Fulton County Superior Court, where he pleaded guilty to a single count of aggravated battery for a jailhouse incident in June 2024. Prosecutors said he and others entered an inmate’s cell and attacked him with an electrical cord. In exchange, multiple other charges were dropped.
When asked by prosecutor Adam Abbate if he was guilty, Kendrick kept it simple: “I’m ready to go home, bro.” Abbate pressed him: “Yes or no? Yes gets you home.”
The court sentenced him to 12 years, with nine months to serve and credit for time already served. If Kendrick stays clean for two years, probation becomes non-reporting. After five years, it gets suspended altogether. Alongside a standard firearm restriction, Kendrick was also warned to avoid promoting gang culture online or in his music. “Just don’t post you hate anyone,” Abbate advised.
Outside court, Kendrick’s mother couldn’t hide her relief. “Victory was won today, and I’m thankful that my son is coming home. I miss him deeply. He got not guilty and he still was in jail, so I’m happy about that.”
“The Yak Man is getting back out on the street,” said attorney Bruce Harvey. “He’s looking forward to being with his family and friends again and getting back in the studio. His album is coming out.”
Judge Paige Reese Whitaker added, “I wish you good luck on your forthcoming album.”
