Jay-Z’s Roc Nation just scored a major legal win in its long-running battle with Houston attorney Tony Buzbee, but the latest ruling may not be the final chapter.
Texas state Judge Kristen Hawkins dismissed all claims brought against Roc Nation by Gerardo Garcia, Jose Maldonado, and the Buzbee Law Firm on June 16, ruling that the plaintiffs failed to show why a Texas court had jurisdiction over the Jay-Z-founded entertainment company. The dismissal clears Roc Nation from the lawsuits in Texas, though the claims could reportedly be refiled in another jurisdiction.
The legal fight began after Buzbee accused Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s law firm Quinn Emanuel, and attorney Marcy Croft of using “shadowy operatives” and financial promises to persuade former Buzbee clients to file “frivolous” lawsuits against him. Roc Nation fired back at the time, calling the lawsuit “another sham.”
One of the plaintiffs, Garcia, alleged that two aggressive investigators came to his Houston home claiming to be with “the state” and offered him “money” to join a class-action lawsuit against Buzbee’s firm.
The controversy traces back to a now-dismissed civil lawsuit that accused Jay-Z and Diddy of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl after the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. Jay-Z immediately denied the allegation, calling it a “blackmail attempt.” The case was dropped with prejudice in February 2025, meaning it cannot be filed again. Afterward, Roc Nation posted, “Today is a victory. The frivolous, fictitious and appalling allegations have been dismissed.”
The case became especially controversial because of the explosive allegation, Jay-Z’s aggressive public denial, and reported inconsistencies in the accuser’s account. ABC News reported that Jay-Z later sued the accuser and her attorneys for defamation, claiming she admitted the story was false and that Buzbee pushed her forward. Buzbee denied wrongdoing and argued Jay-Z’s lawsuit had “no legal merit,” according to The Guardian.
The fight has also become a battle over money and reputation. In an amended complaint, Jay-Z claimed the accusation cost him at least $190 million in income, loans, and business opportunities.
For Roc Nation, the latest dismissal is a significant reset. For Buzbee, it narrows the path forward unless the claims are refiled elsewhere. And for Jay-Z, the ruling adds another legal victory in a case that has moved far beyond the original allegation and into a broader fight over power, credibility, legal tactics, and reputation.
