Terrion Arnold’s NFL future just took a major hit, as the Detroit Lions have released the 23-year-old cornerback following his arrest in a serious Florida kidnapping and armed robbery case.
The team made the move Monday after Arnold’s bond was set at $1 million in Hillsborough County, Florida, where he is facing four counts of kidnapping and four counts of armed robbery, according to the Tampa Police Department.
Arnold, who turned himself in last Wednesday, is accused by authorities of being the alleged “primary conspirator” in a February incident involving three men who prosecutors say were held at gunpoint, beaten, pistol-whipped, and robbed. Investigators claim the alleged attack happened after cash and luxury items, including Rolex watches and Louis Vuitton bags, were reported stolen from Arnold at an Airbnb rental in the Tampa area.
Judge Christopher Sabella denied the state’s request to hold Arnold without bond but placed several restrictions on him. Arnold is not allowed to contact the six co-defendants or witnesses in the case, must surrender his passport within 48 hours, and was ordered to remain at his Tallahassee residence except for football-related duties, training, travel, legal appointments, or court appearances, according to Reuters.
Prosecutors wanted Arnold to wear a GPS monitor, but his attorneys argued that would interfere with his ability to play football. Sabella also noted that while the charges are extremely serious and could carry a life sentence if Arnold is convicted, prosecutors are “not there yet” in proving a strong case for Arnold’s guilt.
Prosecutors say six of Arnold’s associates allegedly carried out the attack while Arnold was not physically present. However, they argue he helped set the situation in motion by allegedly telling associates he believed he knew who stole from him and wanted to confront them.
“Our office remains committed to seeking justice for the three victims in the case who were beaten, robbed, and held against their will,” said Erin Maloney, a spokesperson for the state attorney’s office.
Arnold’s legal team is pushing back hard. Harvey Steinberg, one of Arnold’s attorneys, argued in court that prosecutors are “not even close” to proving Arnold knew what his associates were allegedly going to do or that he directed their actions.
Denise White, CEO of EAG Sports Management, which represents Arnold, also defended him, saying the judge’s ruling “confirms that there is very little evidence to even suggest any criminal involvement by Mr. Arnold.”
The legal drama is also a major football shakeup. Arnold was selected by the Lions in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Alabama and was expected to start at cornerback opposite D.J. Reed. His release now leaves Detroit with a major hole in its secondary just weeks before training camp.
Arnold signed a four-year rookie deal worth more than $14.3 million, including a $7.25 million signing bonus.
For now, Arnold has not been convicted of a crime, and the case remains ongoing. But with the Lions already cutting ties, the fallout is moving fast both in court and across the NFL.
