Donald Trump says Nicki Minaj becoming the next White House press secretary is “a good idea,” and he is going to think about it.
Video:
Trump was asked about it during an interview with conservative commentator Benny Johnson on The Benny Show. “Is Nicki Minaj going to be the next press secretary?” Johnson asked. Trump answered, “That’s a good idea. I think I’ll have to think about that. I’m going to think about that.” Then he flipped the question back on Johnson: “How about you?”
The press secretary is the person who speaks for the White House. They stand at the podium in the briefing room, take questions from reporters and explain the administration’s positions to the public. Right now, nobody has the job.
Katie Zacharia was pushed out on October 16 after five days, the shortest run of any press secretary in modern history. She gave one briefing, which lasted 14 minutes and was widely panned. Then questions came up about her presenting herself as a lawyer without having passed the bar exam. Zacharia had replaced Karoline Leavitt, who left the role in August. Trump has not named anyone since.
Nicki Minaj’s name entered the conversation on October 25, when she flew with Trump on Air Force One to a midterm rally in Port Huron, Michigan. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung posted a video of himself interviewing her on the plane about the economy, polling and Trump’s campaign schedule. He captioned it, “Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary!” Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz followed up with a question for her fan base: “Hey Barbz, what do we think about this idea??” Nicki reshared Cheung’s video with an American flag and a sweating face emoji.
At the rally, Nicki praised Trump’s business background and work ethic and told the crowd he had changed the energy of the country. Trump made headlines of his own when he complimented her behind from the stage, then said he hoped she was not insulted, adding, “We love Nicki.”

Nicki Minaj has been one of Trump’s most visible supporters in entertainment for months. She has not publicly responded to his comments about the press secretary job.
There is no appointment so far, and the White House has not said Nicki is under any formal review for the position.
