Beyoncé’s BeyGOOD Foundation is putting money directly behind Northwest Indiana’s recovery after one of the region’s most destructive weather events in years. The foundation announced $200,000 in emergency relief grants for communities impacted by the August disaster, adding another major philanthropic response to a year that has already seen Beyoncé and BeyGOOD direct resources toward communities facing crisis. The BeyGOOD Indiana relief effort arrives as residents are still dealing with damaged homes, debris, financial losses, and the fallout from days without reliable electricity.

The need is not hard to find. On August 11, a powerful thunderstorm system crossed from Illinois into Northwest and north-central Indiana. Indiana officials said the system produced extreme straight-line winds, tornadoes, large hail and flash flooding. Several areas later recorded between six and nine inches of rain, while rivers rose, roads closed, and some communities faced evacuations. State officials ultimately confirmed seven storm-related deaths across Indiana, including fatalities in Lake and Porter counties.
Northwest Indiana took one of the hardest hits. The storm developed into a confirmed derecho, a sprawling windstorm capable of producing hurricane-force gusts across a wide area. Local reporting documented six tornadoes in the region, including an EF-2 tornado that crossed from Illinois toward Crown Point. Trees came down, homes and businesses were damaged, and huge portions of the electric grid went offline.
Gary became one of the clearest examples of how the disaster kept affecting residents long after the clouds moved out. Nearly two weeks after the storm, thousands of customers in the city were still waiting for power restoration. NIPSCO said it had restored service to more than 364,000 customers systemwide, but damaged equipment and problems at individual properties extended outages for some households. Residents were left navigating spoiled food, heat, transportation issues, and the cost of repairing storm damage at the same time.
That is the backdrop for BeyGOOD’s $200,000 commitment. The foundation announced the money as grants supporting emergency disaster relief efforts in Indiana, where more than 1,000 people had reportedly been displaced following flooding. The contribution lands alongside federal, state, and local assistance, but private grants can play a different role by helping organizations address needs that government programs do not always cover quickly.
Federal help has started moving as well. A major disaster declaration approved August 25 made FEMA assistance available to residents in multiple affected counties, including Lake, LaPorte, and Porter counties in Northwest Indiana. Indiana also opened its State Disaster Relief Fund, which can provide eligible residents with grants of up to $5,000 for certain uninsured losses and essential needs.
For BeyGOOD, the Indiana response fits directly into the foundation’s stated focus on community response. The organization says it supports communities facing economic inequities during crises and disasters, including by funding grassroots organizations and investing in longer-term recovery. Beyoncé founded the philanthropic initiative in 2013, expanding its work across disaster recovery, education, entrepreneurship, housing and other community investments.
The Indiana grant is also part of a busy 2026 giving calendar, although not every major contribution this year has been disaster-related.
In April, Cécred and BeyGOOD announced a $250,000 commitment supporting cosmetology and barbering education in the United States and United Kingdom. Ten participating institutions were selected to receive $25,000 each to help students with tuition and other education-related expenses. That program marked the third year of the Cécred x BeyGOOD Fund.
Beyoncé also has another major humanitarian contribution tied to a disaster this month, but there is an important distinction. Following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10, Parkwood Entertainment confirmed that Beyoncé was personally donating $1 million to organizations providing emergency relief. The money was designated for immediate food and housing needs in some of the hardest-hit communities in Chocó. Reports identified that contribution as a personal donation from Beyoncé rather than a newly announced BeyGOOD Foundation grant, so the two should not be conflated.
BeyGOOD’s disaster work also carries a larger track record. After the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in 2025, the foundation initially committed $2.5 million through its LA Fire Relief Fund. BeyGOOD now says more than $3 million in direct cash assistance was ultimately distributed to more than 200 homeowners and renters affected by the Eaton Fire, while two distribution events provided more than 13,500 essential items.
That history gives the Indiana announcement more context. This is not simply a celebrity check arriving after a trending headline. Disaster response has become a recurring piece of BeyGOOD’s broader philanthropy, with a focus that moves between immediate relief and longer-term community stability.
For Northwest Indiana, that support arrives while recovery is still very much happening in real time. Communities are cleaning up extraordinary amounts of tree debris, residents are documenting property losses, and officials are still directing families toward FEMA, state grants, and local assistance. The Town of Porter extended its local disaster emergency into September because cleanup and recovery needs remained active weeks after the storm.
The weather may have passed, but the bill is still showing up. BeyGOOD’s $200,000 now becomes one more resource in a recovery effort that could last far longer than the headlines.
