"Wheel Of Fortune" Suspends Announcer After He Was Spotted In Pedophile Chat Room With Disturbing Messages About Children

“Wheel Of Fortune” just suspended their announcer and the reason has shocked the game show’s loyal fanbase. Sony Pictures Television confirmed that Jim Thornton has been suspended from “Wheel of Fortune” while the studio investigates allegations involving the longtime voice of the game show. The company is also moving forward with recasting his position during the investigation.

The Jim Thornton suspension took a much more serious turn after TMZ published photos that the outlet said were taken by a fellow passenger aboard an American Airlines flight from Charlotte to Los Angeles in May. According to TMZ, the passenger noticed Thornton using his laptop and believed the screen showed a chat room connected to people with pedophilic thoughts. The images showed messages including, “Couple of cute boys and a hot little girl” and “All-you-can-eat Boyfett.” TMZ’s reporting shows those messages visible on Thornton’s screen, but does not establish that Thornton wrote them.

According to E! News, American Airlines confirmed that the incident happened on May 14 aboard Flight 1276. The airline said law enforcement met the aircraft after it arrived at Los Angeles International Airport because of concerns raised by a passenger. TMZ reported that the passenger showed the photos to a flight attendant, after which the captain contacted authorities.

Thornton was questioned after the plane landed but was allowed to leave, according to TMZ. Multiple outlets, including Entertainment Weekly, have reported that Thornton was not arrested and has not been charged with a crime in connection with the incident. That distinction remains important as Sony’s internal investigation continues.

Thornton’s attorney, Allison Hart, offered a detailed explanation to Page Six, saying her client believed he was accessing a suicide prevention resource and did not initially understand the nature of the website.

“My client has become active in suicide-prevention advocacy since losing a close family member to suicide two years ago, and he has spent time visiting chat rooms offering support to individuals suffering from suicidal ideation,” the statement read. “One of the sites my client has visited is 988lifeline.org, and its chat forum, chat.988lifeline.org. … Through an acquaintance in the suicide prevention space, my client was misdirected to a forum with a similar URL … which my client understood to be a forum offering suicide prevention support similar to 988lifeline.org and chat.988lifeline.org.”

The official 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline website confirms that it provides a legitimate online chat service alongside its call and text options. Its chat service connects people experiencing emotional distress with trained crisis counselors and operates around the clock. Hart’s account is that Thornton was sent to a different website that he mistakenly believed was associated with that type of suicide prevention support.

The explanation has not ended questions surrounding the Jim Thornton suspension. TMZ reported that timestamps visible in the passenger’s photos appeared to indicate that the chat room was open for at least 57 minutes. The timestamps alone do not establish what Thornton was doing for that entire period, but the reported length of time has become a major point of scrutiny because his attorney says he left once he realized what the site was about.

“When my client understood what the website was about, he left the page and has not visited since,” Hart claimed in her statement. “The website … itself is not unlawful, there is no unlawful child pornography or other pedophilic content, and my client has never viewed, downloaded or consumed any child pornography, whether on that commercial flight in May or at any other time.”

Sony has not publicly accused Thornton of committing a crime. Instead, the studio announced the suspension while emphasizing that its own investigation remains underway. The company said, “We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton. He has been suspended from ‘Wheel of Fortune,’ and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation,” according to reports.

The consequences are already affecting production. According to a separate TMZ report, the first month of episodes for the upcoming season had already been taped when Thornton was suspended. Sources told the outlet that producers began reediting those episodes with another announcer ahead of the show’s September 14 season premiere, with one source describing the process as a “major undertaking.” Sony had not announced a permanent replacement in the reporting available as of September 4.

The Jim Thornton suspension is especially notable because of how deeply connected his voice has become to “Wheel of Fortune.” According to the official “Wheel of Fortune” website and reporting from TMZ, Thornton became the show’s regular announcer in 2011 after the death of longtime announcer Charlie O’Donnell in 2010. Thornton has also handled announcing duties for “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune.”

Thornton’s attorney previously pushed back strongly against any suggestion that the airport questioning amounted to criminal wrongdoing. She told TMZ that Thornton “did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested and has not been charged with any crime,” adding, “When questioned about the complaint made by a fellow passenger on the flight, law enforcement spoke to him for five minutes or less, immediately determined that no wrongdoing had occurred and told my client he was free to go.”

For now, Thornton remains suspended, Sony is continuing its investigation, and “Wheel of Fortune” is moving forward with plans to replace his announcing work as the new season approaches.
