"All That" Star Christy Knowings Dies At 46 After Asthma Attack

Christy Knowings, the actress and comedian who became a familiar face to a generation of Nickelodeon viewers on “All That,” has died at 46 after suffering an asthma attack that left her with brain damage.

According to TMZ, a family member said Knowings was hospitalized on Friday, August 7, following the asthma attack and was placed on life support. Her family reportedly kept her on life support through Tuesday, August 11, before making the decision to remove it. Knowings died Tuesday night at a hospital in the Los Angeles area.

Knowings’ manager also confirmed her death to Variety. Remembering the range of her creative work, manager Al Hill said, “Christy was a multi-talented lady,” adding, “Whether it was singing, acting, dancing, she was always creating. Always professional and dedicated to her work.”

Christy Knowings joined “All That” in 1997 after previously appearing in “And Now This,” a Nickelodeon sketch comedy project associated with Rosie O’Donnell. During three seasons with the series, Knowings took on several characters, including Penny Lane and Jessica in the recurring “Whateverrr!!!” sketches alongside Amanda Bynes. The show placed her among a memorable era of young performers that also included Kenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell, Lori Beth Denberg and Danny Tamberelli.

Her work on the series also carried significance beyond individual sketches. In a 2019 interview with Bustle, Christy Knowings reflected on what the show’s diverse cast meant at a time when young viewers did not always see themselves represented in mainstream children’s television. Knowings, who described herself as a Bronx native with Native American and Afro Latina roots, said the cast was able to introduce cultural details that writers might not have otherwise captured.

“’All That’ showcased the unity that we all wanted, needed and still need in a very humorous way,” Knowings told Bustle while discussing the show’s lasting impact. She also recalled hearing from Black viewers who recognized the importance of seeing her on screen during her seasons with the series.

Christy Knowings continued working after “All That.” She later appeared on “Sesame Street” with her real life twin brother, Chris Knowings, and released the folk single “To the World” in 2020.

Following news of her death, former castmate Kenan Thompson shared a tribute on Instagram. Thompson remembered Knowings by writing, “She was a real one and one of the funniest people out here!!! Gonna miss you buddy!!!”

Knowings’ death comes months after another former “All That” cast member, Kianna Underwood, died at 33 following a January hit-and-run collision in Brooklyn. For viewers who grew up with Nickelodeon’s defining era of sketch comedy, Christy Knowings leaves behind characters, performances and representation that became part of the childhood memories of an entire generation.
