Caleb Flynn, the former American Idol contestant and music pastor, was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, inside their Tipp City, Ohio home.

Judge Jeannine Pratt handed down the sentence in Miami County Common Pleas Court in Troy, one week after a jury found the 40 year old guilty on nine counts, including aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence. The jury deliberated for just over two hours. The remaining counts were merged into the aggravated murder conviction.

“No sentence can bring Ashley back to her children but there must be justice,” Pratt said from the bench. She told Flynn the court was “left with one clear and obvious conclusion, that you, Mr. Flynn, pose a clear risk to the public,” and said, “The person who should have been protecting his children shattered their innocence and took their mother from them.

Ashley Flynn was 37. She was a schoolteacher, a volleyball coach and the mother of two daughters. She was shot and killed in February 2026, and her daughters were home when police arrived. Prosecutors said Caleb Flynn staged the scene to look like a home invasion. He told investigators a burglar killed his wife.

The evidence at trial told a different story. Prosecutors showed jurors Flynn’s fingerprints and DNA at the scene, along with data from his devices showing him moving through the house at a time he claimed to be asleep. They also showed a text he sent the night before the killing to Alleigha Botner, a church intern he had been having an affair with for more than a year. “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow,” the message read.

Botner, who was 20 when she met Flynn in 2022, testified that he told her he hated his wife and had thought about killing her. Prosecutors also presented AI generated love songs they said Flynn made for Botner.

Flynn’s defense argued that the gun was never recovered and that no evidence proved he fired a weapon that day.

Prosecutor Paul Watkins opened the hearing by putting the focus on the victim. “Today should not begin with a number. It should begin with a name, Ashley,” he said.

Ashley’s family spoke about the mother they lost. A statement from one of her daughters was read in court. “Mommy was a perfect person. The absolute perfect person … I miss her so much,” it said. A letter from her other daughter ended with a message for her father: “And by the way, I don’t plan on coming to see you.”

Ashley’s father, Todd Smith, told Flynn, “We forgive you for taking Ashley.” Her sister, Kayla Keyt, extended that forgiveness to the woman at the center of the affair. “I forgive you and Alleigha,” she said.

Caleb Flynn addressed the court in tears and continued to maintain his innocence. “I did not kill my wife,” he said, adding that he would “continue to fight for my innocence.” He spoke directly to his daughters. “You both are my greatest joy in this life. Please know your daddy is so proud of you and loves you,” he said.

Defense attorney Patrick Mulligan said Flynn plans to appeal.

Before the case, Flynn’s biggest public moment came in 2013, when he auditioned for American Idol’s 12th season in front of judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson. He did not advance to the Hollywood rounds. He later became a music pastor.

His wife’s family has said Ashley wanted her life to point people to Jesus. After the guilty verdict last week, they said the conviction brought justice and accountability but could not give the girls back their mother.
