Kerry Washington’s “mother of three” comment sparked curiosity among fans but the actress is clearing the air of pregnancy rumors.
Washington visited the set of NBC’s Today to promote her new Broadway play “American Son.” During the discussion, Craig Melvin referred to Washington as a “mother of two,” referencing her two children with her husband Nnamdi Asomugha, but Washington quickly corrected Melvin, calling herself a “mother of three.”
Social media took the news and ran, believing Washington secretly had a child, but Washington meant a mother of three by marriage, as she is a step-mother as well. For the remainder of the interview, Washington talked all things “American Son.” The play is currently in previews; Washington works alongside Steven Pasquale. The play takes place in Florida and tells the story of a woman whose son goes missing.
“It’s definitely, for me, one of the most challenging projects I’ve ever taken on as an actor. It’s very special to me. It’s a really beautiful play about parenting and about love and about identity and race. I feel like the luckiest woman in the world that I get to do it eight times a week,” the 41-year-old actress admitted to Craig. “And also…it’s really hard!”
Washington says this role is unique and brings many different perspectives and thoughts to the forefront of media. “It’s people having very, very private conversations in public. So, it’s things that a lot of us maybe say to the people closest to us, but we’re all saying them in a room. Four people with very, very, very different opinions and viewpoints on the world all sharing their opinions on each other? It’s exciting and different,” Kerry explained. “I’ve never seen anything like it. I’ve never played a character like this before.”
