Less than two years after Andrew Gillum lost the Florida Governor’s race to Ron DeSantis, the former Democratic candidate is now in the center of a suspected crystal meth incident.

According to local news, the incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m., after Miami Beach emergency officers were called to a West Avenue hotel over a suspected drug overdose.

Upon arrival, officials found Gillum, and two other men inside the hotel room. One of the men, who has been identified as 56-year-old Aldo Mejias, said he gave his information to 30-year-old Travis Dyson to rent the room for a night.

Mejias said Dyson rented the room around 4 p.m., but he arrived later that night, which is when he found both Dyson and Gillum inside the room, appearing to be under the influence.

After opening the door, Mejias said Dyson collapsed on the bed. Dyson then began to have difficulty breathing and started throwing up, just before he collapsed for a second time.

According to Mejias, he tried to do CPR on Dyson before calling 911. Upon arrival, the police tried to talk to Gillum, but he was too intoxicated. However, they did find three small clear bags inside the hotel room, which contained suspected crystal meth.

Dyson was then taken to the hospital, where he was later listed in stable condition. Gillum was later reported to be stable with normal vitals as well.

“I was in Miami last night for a wedding celebration when first responders were called to assist one of my friends,” Gillum said in a statement. “While I had too much to drink, I want to be clear that I have never used methamphetamines. I apologize to the people of Florida for the distraction this has caused our movement.”

“I’m thankful to the incredible Miami Beach EMS team for their efforts. I will spend the next few weeks with my family and appreciate privacy during this time,” he continued.

It remains unclear if any of the men will face charges.
