Former Florida governor candidate Andrew Gillum is at the center of a suspected crystal meth incident in Miami Beach, according to police and local news reports.

Authorities said emergency crews were called to a hotel just before 1 a.m. over a suspected drug overdose. Officials found Gillum and two other men in the room. One of the men, Aldo, told local reporters he had given his information to a friend named Travis so the room could be rented for a night. He said Travis rented it that afternoon and that he arrived later, when he found Travis and Gillum inside, appearing to be under the influence.

Aldo said Travis collapsed, had trouble breathing and became sick, and that he tried CPR before calling 911. Police said they tried to speak with Gillum but he was too intoxicated, and they reportedly found three small bags of suspected crystal meth in the room. Travis was taken to a hospital and later listed in stable condition. Gillum was reported to be stable as well.

Gillum released a statement saying he was in Miami for a wedding celebration when first responders were called to help a friend. He said he had too much to drink but wrote, “I have never used methamphetamines.” He thanked Miami Beach EMS, apologized to the people of Florida for the distraction, and asked for privacy while he spends time with his family.

It was not clear whether anyone would face charges. Hours later, Travis spoke out too. Read what he said here.
