A new study revealed that nearly a quarter of all songs uploaded to streaming platforms last year received zero plays. That equates to about 38 million tracks that not one person listened to.
Are these artists uploading music and not even listening to their own songs?! That seems to be the case.
The grim statistic from Luminate, an entertainment tracking service, was first reported on by Music Business Worldwide. According to the outlet, the information was presented during a presentation by Luminate’s CEO, Rob Jonas, during SXSW.
In addition to the 38 million songs with zero plays, 67.1 million, or just under half of the entire catalog of songs on all streaming platforms, have received less than ten streams. In total, the entire catalog of songs on worldwide streaming platforms sits at about 158 million.
But to have zero plays? It seems mindboggling that someone would put so much effort into creating art and then not even take the time to press play on it themselves. Or not even asking their friends and family to take a listen.
