The victim of a freak accident that was shot in her clitoris has successfully had the bullet removed.
Recently, a Somalian woman whose name has not been revealed publicly was in her home when a stray bullet broke through the ceiling. She was struck in her genital region, with the bullet becoming lodged inside her clitoris. Per a report published in the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports, her injury was the first of its kind. Other types of vulvic trauma are extremely rare, noted the authors of the study. It is typically only seen with sexual assaults, insect bites, or injuries sustained while playing sports. However, an object being accidentally trapped inside the clitoris is unheard of.
“To the best of our knowledge, this is the first wayward bullet injury penetrating the vulvar area with a retained bullet in the clitoris,” the report stated.
After the shooting, the 24-year-old woman immediately sought medical treatment at the Erdogan Hospital in Mogadishu. A CT scan confirmed the bullet stuck inside her clitoris. It had not moved nor impacted any other area. Doctors were able to perform surgery on the woman with only a “minor incision” to free the object from her body.
As for the victim, she was discharged just one day after the procedure, and no further no complications were reported. During a month check-up, physicians found that she was continuing to heal well.
It remains unclear what circumstances led to the shooting or if anyone will face charges.
