The fake 49ers player did not run his scheme alone. Taylor Jamie Chan, 18, was arrested alongside Daejon Labrayae Love on August 24 and charged in Portland with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud, the same two counts Love faces. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon, Chan’s role was to pose as Love’s investment adviser.That role mattered more than it might sound. Love could tell women he was rich, but a second voice made it verifiable. Prosecutors say Love and Chan exchanged investment-related messages with each other, with Chan writing as the professional managing Love’s money, and Love then screenshotted those exchanges and forwarded them to the women he was dating. The U.S. Attorney’s Office put it plainly in its statement, saying Love convinced victims they were in sincere romantic relationships with him, that he was a sophisticated investor, and that Chan was the adviser who had helped him grow a fortune worth tens of millions of dollars.Taylor Jamie Chan was not just background. When women agreed to invest, prosecutors say the money went to either Love or Chan directly. Twenty six identified women across Oregon, Washington, Idaho and California sent roughly $1.3 million total. None of the victims interviewed by investigators received any returns, any repayment, or any account holding their money. When a woman ran out of money or started asking too many questions, Love blocked her.Federal prosecutors say the scheme began in February 2022 and ran until the day of the arrests. Chan is 18 now. That math puts him in his early teens when the government says the operation started. The complaint does not specify when Chan personally joined, so it is an open question rather than a settled fact, but it is the question the case will have to answer.The arrest itself reads like the end of a movie. Arrest warrants for both men were issued on August 17. A week later, on August 24, Chan flew from California to Boise, Idaho to meet Love. Investigators say Love was in Idaho to meet new victims. The FBI and other law enforcement were waiting and took both men into custody at the Boise airport. The government notes Love had been moving constantly that summer, traveling through New Mexico, California, Oregon, Nevada, Utah and Idaho between July 15 and August 24.Wire fraud means using phones, texts, apps or the internet to take someone’s money through lies. Conspiracy to commit wire fraud means agreeing with someone else to do it. Both are federal charges, and the conspiracy count is what makes Chan’s exposure serious even though Love was the one on the dating apps. Under conspiracy law, you do not have to be the person who told the lie. Agreeing to the plan and playing your part in it is enough.The FBI is still looking for people who encountered either man and is asking anyone with information about Daejon Love or Taylor Jamie Chan to submit a tip at tips.fbi.gov or call 1-800-CALL-FBI. Given that Love used at least four names, including Jon Love, Avril Lyto Love and Jordan Love, investigators appear to be working under the assumption that the 26 identified women are not the full count.
