San Antonio police are investigating the deaths of two adults and four young children who were found inside an SUV in the garage of their home on Thursday, according to CNN and local reports.
Police Chief William McManus said officers went to the home for a welfare check requested by the man’s workplace after he did not report in. When officers opened the front door they smelled fumes and backed out. Police say a note on the door with military jargon warned people not to enter, so authorities checked for explosives and found none.
McManus said at a press conference that the deaths did not appear to be an accident and that the apparent cause was CO poisoning. He said there are no words to describe the scene, noting that the family’s pets were also found. The Army confirmed the man, Jared, 38, was a soldier assigned to the 470th Military Intelligence Brigade. The family members have not been publicly identified by police, and the investigation is ongoing.
A spokeswoman for the brigade said in a statement, “Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the deceased.”
