Majdi Wadi, the CEO of Minnesota food business Holy Land, has fired his daughter Lianne after old racist social media posts she wrote resurfaced online, according to CBS Minnesota (WCCO) and other local outlets.
The posts, which appeared on Twitter and Instagram about eight years ago when Lianne was a teenager, reportedly included racial slurs and offensive remarks about several groups. Lianne worked for the family business as its catering director.
In a statement Thursday, Majdi said the company, which was formed by immigrants, does not tolerate that kind of behavior. He said the posts do not reflect who his daughter is today, pointing to her support for Black Lives Matter and her help for Twin Cities businesses and families. He apologized for the language and said the company would bring in outside training for employees on racial discrimination.
Lianne also apologized in an interview with WCCO. “I want to apologize from the bottom of my heart,” she said, calling the posts horrible and vile and saying they do not represent who she is now.
The fallout continued. Midtown Global Market in Minneapolis announced Thursday that it was ending its lease with Holy Land’s location there, according to the Star Tribune. The story broke as protests continued across the Twin Cities after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody.
