A restaurant employee in Orlando is being called a hero after police say a discreet note she wrote helped a boy get out of an abusive home.
Flavaine noticed that the boy, who had visible bruises and was dining out with his family, was not being given food. She wrote him a note that read, Do you need help? The boy nodded yes.
The restaurant’s owner told reporters, you saved the boy’s life, and said it brings the staff to tears to think a child could be treated that way.
According to CBS News, the 11 year old told Orlando detectives he had been hung upside down from a door, hit with a broom and handcuffed to a moving dolly, and that he did not eat regularly. Police said the boy’s stepfather was arrested on a child abuse charge.
A detective described the boy’s treatment as torture and said his bruising was in different stages of healing, meaning it was ongoing. After investigating, detectives also arrested the boy’s mother on two counts of child neglect. Police said she acknowledged the abuse. Both adults are presumed innocent until proven guilty, and Baller Alert has not seen a statement from either of them.
The Orlando Police Department praised Flavaine on Twitter for speaking up, saying she showed courage and care for a child she had never met.
