A championship celebration for WNBA star Arike Ogunbowale reportedly ended with an arrest early Thursday morning in Miami.
Ogunbowale’s arrest quickly became part of the conversation after her team secured a major win hours earlier. According to Miami-Dade police, the Dallas Wings guard was taken into custody shortly before 4:30 a.m. on March 5 after an alleged altercation at Club E11EVEN. Authorities say the 29-year-old is accused of punching a man while out celebrating with teammates following the Unrivaled league championship.
Police charged Ogunbowale with misdemeanor battery. She was later released after posting a $1,000 bond.
The reported incident happened during celebrations for Mist BC, Ogunbowale’s team, in the Unrivaled league. The squad had just secured the league’s championship earlier that night in South Florida. Reports say the unidentified man fell to the ground after being struck, and the moment was allegedly captured on video.
Unrivaled Basketball confirmed the situation in a statement to PEOPLE, saying, “The league is aware of an incident involving Arike Ogunbowale, and we are in the process of gathering additional information. We’re in contact with Arike and her representatives.”
The Dallas Wings also acknowledged the situation and said the organization is reviewing what happened.
“We are aware” of the arrest and are “in the process of gathering more information,” the team told PEOPLE. “Further comments will be provided once we have more details.”
Before the arrest, Ogunbowale had helped lead Mist BC to the championship, scoring 19 points in the title game. Teammate Breanna Stewart reflected on the team’s run, telling reporters, “What I’ll remember the most about this Mist team is we might not be the loudest, but we’re going to work the hardest.”
Ogunbowale later reposted a video from the team’s celebration showing players partying in the club. In the clip, she can be heard asking, “Who’s on the aux?” as teammates posed for victory photos.
Officials have not announced any disciplinary action as the situation continues to develop.
