Authorities in Zanzibar, Tanzania have made a decisive move in the investigation into the death of Ashlee Jenae by withholding her partner’s passport, effectively preventing him from leaving the country while key questions remain unanswered.
The influencer, whose real name is Ashly Robinson, 31, died last week during what had been a highly publicized vacation in Tanzania. Her partner, Joe McCann, 45, is now central to the timeline authorities are working to piece together. While police continue to stress that he is not a suspect, his status as a witness has not stopped them from taking measures to ensure he remains available for questioning.
The decision to hold his passport is a procedural step often used in international investigations when an individual is considered critical to understanding the circumstances surrounding a death. It allows authorities to maintain access to that person while forensic results, including the official medical examination report, are still pending.
“Investigations into the case are ongoing, including awaiting the official medical examination report from doctors,” police said, signaling that the full picture has yet to come into focus.
Robinson’s final hours remain under scrutiny. Her family said she had “been found unconscious in her villa and taken to hospital, where her death was confirmed hours later.” Earlier statements from local police suggested she had attempted to take her own life, a claim her parents openly challenge.
In interviews, they said her death “doesn’t make any sense” and described her as “a light” and a “beautiful person” who was “supposed to be happy.” The sudden shift from celebration to tragedy has only intensified their concerns. She had just celebrated her birthday and gotten engaged during the trip. “And then she is just gone,” her mother, Yolanda Endres, said. “We are confused about how that could change so drastically.”
Police have also pointed to a reported misunderstanding between Robinson and McCann prior to her death, with hotel staff separating the two into different rooms. The situation escalated when concerns were raised about a guest believed to be suicidal, prompting intervention and, ultimately, the emergency response.
Robinson’s parents say they heard from McCann 11 hours after the incident, “not with a lot of detail,” before later receiving confirmation of her death from the hotel.
For now, the withheld passport underscores one reality: investigators are not closing any doors. Until medical findings are finalized and timelines fully verified, McCann remains in Zanzibar, not under arrest, but not free to leave either.

She shouldn’t have been with that guy. Total mismatch. She is attractive, he is not. She would have done better with a man of her color. That guy did something to her but because she is black they really don’t care.
praying for strength for everyone so sad🥺🥺
Joe McCann probably reported that information about her being suicidal. He figured they find her dead they would connect it to her being reported as suicidal. He knew he had plans to kill her, thinking he could get off on killing her without fingers being pointed at him. I wonder if there were some men interested in her that made Joe McCann jealous and then the argument began from there and/or Joe trying to control her when she wanted to really just enjoy her life in a new country and he didn’t like it. I think Joe did it. Probably was some handsome black men showing her a lot of attention and Joe McCann wasn’t having it.
So sad and she was so young and beautiful.
He did it
