A former Miss Pennsylvania U.S. International has been sentenced to prison after admitting she lied about having cancer. According to CNN, Brandi, 24, was sentenced on Tuesday, July 26, to two to four years in prison, followed by five years of probation.
Court proceedings and news reports say Brandi told friends and family in March 2013 that she had leukemia. Relatives raised money and supported her during what they believed was her treatment. Reports say family members grew suspicious when she wanted to attend chemotherapy by herself, and they later contacted the hospital she named and were told there were no records showing she was a patient or had cancer.
CNN reports she pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including theft by deception and receiving stolen property. According to reports, she acknowledged raising a large sum of money from about 150 people, some of whom were cancer patients themselves. The pageant organization stripped her of her title and asked for the crown and sash back.
The sentence closes a case that drew attention because of how many people stepped up to help someone they believed was sick.
