Steak N Shake is now selling beef tallow skincare, starting with a lotion, a sunscreen and a lip balm. The chain announced the line in a post telling customers who already love its grass-fed Steakburgers and tallow fries that it is time to love its skincare too. The company called it a 100% beef tallow product line and said it is available at all locations and online right now.

Tallow is beef fat that has been melted down and strained until it becomes a solid that stays firm at room temperature. Restaurants cooked with it for generations before vegetable oils took over, and Steak N Shake has leaned hard into the comeback. The company says its fries, tots, onion rings, and chicken tenders are cooked in 100% beef tallow, and that its fries and tots are free of seed oils, which are oils pressed from seeds like canola and sunflower. At the Natural Products Expo West trade show in March, the chain introduced a retail tallow line along with frozen bags of tallow fries and tots. Christopher Ward, its chief global supply chain officer, said every product is free of additives, preservatives, and chemicals. The online shop also sells jars of grass-fed and Wagyu tallow for home cooking at $17.99 and $19.99.
Steak N Shake had already teased a tallow lip balm on X, saying people would soon be able to protect their lips with tallow free of seed oils, fragrance, and chemicals. The online shop now labels its beef tallow skincare collection as new, and it lists more than the three products in the announcement. The one-ounce lip balm is $7 in peppermint, vanilla almond, and unscented. The eight-ounce body lotion is $21 in lavender, sandalwood, and unscented. The 3.4 ounce unscented SPF 30 sunscreen is $14. A four-ounce tallow balm runs $12, and a four-ounce tallow soap runs $8, both in lavender, sandalwood, and unscented.
The sunscreen has an official label on file with DailyMed, the federal database of medication labels, where it is listed under HRR Enterprises, Inc. That label names zinc oxide as the active ingredient, a mineral that sits on top of the skin and blocks ultraviolet rays from the sun. The ingredient list names tallow along with other ingredients, including tocopherol acetate, a form of vitamin E. The label also carries the standard sun safety directions, including limiting time in the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and wearing long sleeves, hats, and sunglasses.
Steak N Shake is not the first company to sell beef tallow skincare. Aterian, a consumer products company, launched a tallow line of balms and salves under its Healing Solutions brand in October 2025, and smaller brands have sold tallow lotions, lip balms and sun balms online for a while. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, released January 7, also listed beef tallow and butter as cooking fat options after olive oil, which added fuel to a trend that was already running on social media.
Beef tallow skincare has drawn plenty of attention from doctors. Scripps Health reports that tallow is thick and can clog pores, especially for people with acne-prone skin. Dr. E. Victor Ross, director of laser and cosmetic dermatology at Scripps Clinic Carmel Valley, says a small amount may be tolerated by people with really dry skin and no history of breakouts, while people with oily or sensitive skin should be careful. Cleveland Clinic states there is no evidence that beef tallow is good for skin and lists breakouts, irritation, and allergic reactions as possible side effects.
GoodRx reports that the fatty acids in tallow can work as a moisturizer for people with dry skin or a weakened skin barrier, which is the outer layer that holds moisture in, though it cautions that tallow should not replace proven treatments. The dermatology practice Heymann, Manders, Green & Sommer states that tallow on its own does not provide adequate UV protection and cannot replace sunscreen, which is why the zinc oxide listed on Steak N Shake’s sunscreen label is the ingredient built for that job.
