Brandy is no longer staying silent while others try to piece together her history. The singer recently hopped on social media to dead the noise regarding her relationship with rapper Shyne during the late ’90s.
While some have tried to frame their past connection as a romance, Brandy is setting the record straight that they were never more than friends.
“In the late 90’s, I had a platonic friendship with rapper Shyne. In an unfortunate turn of events, that friendship is now being mischaracterized as ‘we dated!’ Unequivocally, we did not! I’m not sure why an untrue narrative about a scope of what was a friendship more than 20-years ago is being reshaped during his current media interviews,” she clarified.
The sudden shift in the narrative seems to have caught the singer off guard, especially since these stories are resurfacing decades later. Brandy admitted she usually ignores the gossip and “rarely release statements,” even when the headlines are completely off base. However, this time she felt it was necessary to step in and handle things on her own terms. She noted that this constant cycle of people telling “their version” of her life is exactly what pushed her to finally release her new book.
“People telling their version of my story is why I am releasing my upcoming memoir ‘PHASES.’ It’s time to tell my truth and debunk many of the misnomers that people think they know about my life. Additionally, I rarely release statements and typically ignore stories about me in the headlines even when they’re false,” she shared, pointing fans toward her memoir PHASES, which drops March 31, 2026.
Even when it comes to family, Brandy is keeping things strictly factual. While she has love for her brother Ray J, she didn’t hesitate to distance herself from his recent online commentary about the situation. She made it clear that she doesn’t support the messages he’s been putting out and emphasized that she never asked him to jump in and defend her publicly. “But when I do decide to standup for myself, I handle things on my own. While I love my brother Ray J, I don’t condone or support the messages he’s shared on social media and have not asked him to defend me in any form,” she stated.
This era is all about the icon standing on her own feet and ensuring that when her life is discussed, it’s coming straight from the source.
