The Bumble dating app just changed one of the biggest rules in online dating, and the days of women always having to send that first message are officially over. According to an official announcement from Bumble, anyone who matches can now start the conversation. The company is also stretching the response window from 24 hours to 72 hours, giving people three days to decide whether they want to keep the connection going.
That is a serious switch for an app that built much of its identity around women controlling how heterosexual conversations started. Bumble says founder and CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd launched the platform in 2014 with women placed at the center of the dating experience. Now, instead of making women responsible for opening every conversation, the Bumble dating app is leaning into choice. Bumble says only one opening message can be sent before the other person responds, so users still cannot flood a fresh match with messages before getting an answer.
The change also appears to be something many women actually wanted. According to Bumble’s own research, 66 percent of 2,267 women surveyed on the app in the United States said they preferred men to send the first message. Bumble said many respondents felt that approach could make dating feel less pressured. That survey was conducted in August 2024, meaning the company had been sitting on feedback pointing toward a different approach well before this latest rollout.
Bumble also tested the updated experience with members in Canada during June and July 2026. The company said those tests produced an increase in conversations being started while opening messages became more evenly divided between men and women. More than half of surveyed members in the test said the longer reply window improved their experience, while 92 percent of women said they still felt in control of their dating experience. For the Bumble dating app, those numbers give the company an argument that removing the old requirement does not automatically mean removing women’s agency.
The new system does not mean Bumble is turning the inbox into a free for all. The company says a match remains limited to one initial message until the recipient responds and opens the full chat. Bumble also says people who attempt to send a low effort, one word opener may receive a prompt encouraging them to put more thought into the message. In other words, men can finally shoot their shot first without Bumble completely abandoning its push for more intentional conversations.
This shift did not happen overnight. Bumble previously introduced Opening Moves, which allows users to place a conversation prompt on their profile that a match can answer. According to Bumble’s support documentation, the feature was designed to reduce some of the pressure associated with initiating a conversation. The new update takes that idea further by removing the requirement that women must initiate heterosexual chats altogether.
There is also a business story happening behind the dating conversation. According to Bumble’s second quarter 2026 financial results, total revenue fell 15.2 percent from the same period a year earlier, landing at $210.5 million. Total paying users dropped 16.4 percent to about 3.2 million, while Bumble app revenue declined 14.7 percent to $171.7 million. Those numbers put extra weight on every major product change the company makes as it tries to give users more reasons to stick around.
The broader online dating business is dealing with its own challenges. Reuters reported that dating companies are responding to user fatigue surrounding traditional swipe based apps and slower growth by experimenting with new features, including artificial intelligence tools. Reuters also reported that Bumble’s tests produced higher chat initiation, fewer expired conversations and more mutual chats.
For singles, though, the biggest change is much simpler. That awkward moment after a match no longer comes with one person automatically carrying the responsibility of getting things started. The Bumble dating app is betting that giving both people permission to speak first, plus more time to answer, can make online dating feel a little less like another deadline sitting on your phone.
And for anybody who has ever stared at a match waiting for somebody to say something, Bumble just made one thing clear: whoever has the confidence can go ahead and send the message.
