A student is in custody after eight people were stabbed at a high school in Pickering, Ontario.
According to Durham Regional Police Sgt. Bill Calder, officers were called to Dunbarton High School around 8:30 Tuesday morning after a caller reported a female student walking the halls with two steak knives. Six students and two staff members were hurt. Police say one victim had serious injuries, but none of the injuries were considered life threatening.
One 14 year old witness told reporters she came face to face with the suspect and “just ran for my life.” Another student said that teachers told everyone to clear the halls and that he warned classmates to get to safety before sheltering in a locked classroom.
Police have not released the name or age of the student in custody. Calder said she is in the younger grades and that the attack appeared to be random. Two staff members stopped the attack by tackling the student and holding her until police arrived. Charges are pending, and police would not say which ones she could face.
The school is no longer on lockdown and police have left the campus. This report is based on information from CBC News and Durham Regional Police.
