Chris Brown is pushing back publicly after journalist David Dennis Jr. accused the R&B star of continuing to abuse women, turning a broader conversation about Brown’s fan base and controversial history into a direct exchange between the singer and the writer.

Dennis recently posted a video to his personal Instagram account questioning the way some Chris Brown supporters defend the singer when his past is brought into conversations about his music and career. Dennis argued that fans should acknowledge the full history surrounding Brown rather than minimize allegations and legal controversies because they enjoy his music.Dennis made his position especially clear when he claimed Brown was “still actively abusing women to this day and kind of never stopped.” Dennis framed the conversation around whether fans can separate Brown’s artistic talent from allegations and incidents involving women that have followed him throughout his career.
The Chris Brown response came directly in Dennis’ comment section. Brown challenged Dennis to produce evidence supporting the assertion that he is currently abusing women and specifically asked the journalist to identify criminal charges or convictions involving violence against women from the years following his 2009 case. Brown also accused Dennis of treating allegations and headlines as established facts before telling him, “I want you to show me those charges and convictions.”
Dennis did not let the challenge end there. He responded by asking Brown directly whether he was saying that he had never physically harmed a woman during the past 17 years and whether every subsequent accusation and restraining order involving him was false.
The exchange also follows Dennis’ recent work at Andscape. In a September 18 column examining celebrity accountability, touring power and fan loyalty, Dennis discussed Brown’s career alongside other major artists whose controversies have not prevented them from continuing to attract large audiences. Andscape identifies Dennis as a senior writer and the author of “The Movement Made Us: A Father, a Son, and the Legacy of a Freedom Ride.”
The documented record at the center of the Chris Brown response includes both established court outcomes and allegations that did not result in criminal convictions. According to the Los Angeles Times, Brown pleaded guilty in 2009 to one count of felony assault involving his then girlfriend Rihanna and received probation, community labor, and domestic violence programming as part of his sentence.
Years later, Brown’s former girlfriend Karrueche Tran obtained a five-year restraining order against him. Tran accused Brown in court filings of threatening her and physically abusing her during their relationship. The restraining order was granted after a court proceeding, but it was not a criminal conviction.
Brown was also sued in 2022 by a woman who accused him of drugging and raping her in 2020, an allegation Brown denied. According to City News Service, a judge later dismissed the $20 million lawsuit for lack of prosecution and did so without prejudice, meaning the dismissal was procedural rather than a finding on whether the underlying allegation was true or false.
Brown has also had a more recent violence case that did not involve a woman. He pleaded guilty in July 2026 to affray stemming from a 2023 London nightclub confrontation involving music producer Abraham Diaw. Prosecutors dropped more serious assault charges after the plea. Because Diaw is a man, that case does not directly establish the claim Dennis made about current violence against women.
While the comment section exchange was unfolding, Brown also posted a much broader message through his verified Instagram account. In the Instagram Story provided to Baller Alert, Brown did not name Dennis, but he made it clear that his frustration extends well beyond one journalist.

I hate the music industry. I don’t wanna participate in this circus. If it doesn’t benefit my children I don’t need it. You will no longer be able to be around me. F**K BEING HUMBLE. F**k your agenda. F**k your narrative. F**k how you feel. I DONT LIKE NONE OF YOU CELEBRITIES. I AM THE BEST HANDS
DOWN. IM THE KING. IM ON THAT TYPE OF TIMING. NOT A SINGLE ARTIST ON THIS PLANET CAN F**K WIT ME ON MY WORST DAY! They know it. I’m tired of being nice. F**K YO OPINION. ILL BE THE VILLAIN .”
Because Brown did not mention Dennis in that Story, there is no verified basis to describe the rant itself as a direct response to the journalist. What is clear is that both posts arrived as Brown publicly rejected criticism surrounding his history, challenged a journalist to distinguish allegations from convictions, and declared that he no longer wants approval from celebrities or the music industry.
