Cindy McCain, an anti trafficking advocate and the widow of Senator John McCain, is walking back a story she shared about an encounter at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
Earlier this week, McCain told radio station KTAR that she saw a woman with a toddler at the airport and something did not seem right to her. “It was a woman of a different ethnicity than the child,” she said, adding that she told police and that officers questioned the woman. According to McCain, “by God, she was trafficking that kid.”
Phoenix police later said otherwise. As reported by the New York Post, police conducted a welfare check after McCain’s report, and Sgt. Armando Carbajal said, “Officers determined there was no evidence of criminal conduct or child endangerment.”
McCain then shared a statement on Twitter. “At Phoenix Sky Harbor, I reported an incident that I thought was trafficking. I commend the police officers for their diligence. I apologize if anything else I have said on this matter distracts from ‘if you see something, say something.'”
The story drew criticism online from people who said a report based on how a woman and child looked was unfair to families of mixed backgrounds.
