Boxer Claressa Shields

Boxing champion Claressa Shields had some questions after losing out on the Sportswoman of the Year award at the BET Awards—and she took to social media to get a few things off her chest.

In a tweet that quickly gained traction, Shields wrote, “Still don’t know how I didn’t win the Sportswoman of the Year for the BET Awards, but Congrats to Angel Reese and all the other nominees. I just thought accolades mattered.” Her tone wasn’t bitter but it was clear she expected her extensive list of accomplishments to carry more weight.

When a user tried to defend Angel Reese, noting that she too has accolades, Shields doubled down. “Yes, she does, but who has more accolades… more success in their field? Please use Google before responding,” she replied.Claressa Shields Throws Subtle Shade After Losing to Angel Reese at BET Awards

She clarified further, saying she wasn’t throwing shade at Reese, but simply pointing out that when it comes to trophies, titles, and historic wins—her resume is hard to ignore. “Ain’t nobody saying Angel Reese don’t have accolades or she not good… I’m saying I thought the person with ‘THE MOST’ accolades & accomplishments would win the Award. I’m team Angel Reese!”

Shields is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and the first boxer—male or female—to hold all four major world titles simultaneously in two weight classes. Her track record is undeniable, but the BET Awards seemed to go with the moment—and right now, Angel Reese is the cultural it-girl in sports.
Whether you agree with the outcome or not, Shields reminded everyone that her name belongs in any serious conversation about athletic excellence. And next time, she hopes people do their homework.
