A Hawaii man convicted in a road rage attack showed up to his sentencing wearing blackface, according to local reports.
Mark, of Oahu, appeared in court with his face painted black and told the court that authorities were treating him like a Black man. Shortly before he was sentenced, he said he was being given a life sentence for trying to defend himself against three men, according to video recorded by KGMB. He reportedly used a permanent marker to darken his face.
Mark was found guilty in March of three counts of attempted murder in connection with a 2016 stabbing incident that appeared to start as road rage. According to KGMB, the victims included a driver, a passenger and an uninvolved driver, and one victim was stabbed five times and hospitalized in critical condition.
Judge Todd Eddins responded during sentencing, telling Mark that when he looks in the mirror he will not see a Black person and will instead see a menace to society, KITV reported.
Mark was sentenced on Monday to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
