Prosecutors in Alabama have dropped the manslaughter charge against Marshae, a 27 year old woman who lost her unborn child after she was shot during a fight, according to CBS News and other outlets.
Jefferson County District Attorney Lynniece Washington announced the decision at a news conference on Wednesday and said no further legal action would be taken. The case drew national criticism, including from abortion rights advocates, before the charge was dropped. “This is a truly disturbing and heartbreaking case,” Washington said, adding that families on both sides had suffered.
Marshae was five months pregnant when she was shot in the stomach during a physical altercation with 23 year old Ebony. A grand jury ruled that Ebony acted in self defense and did not indict her. Marshae was later indicted on a charge alleging she intentionally caused the death of her unborn baby by starting the fight while knowing she was pregnant.
Marshae’s attorneys said they were pleased with the district attorney’s decision and said it will help her continue to heal and rebuild her life. They also said the community that supported her can now focus on making sure what happened to her does not happen again.
