A story involving Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston was developing in mid November 2013. Reports said Winston was the subject of a Tallahassee police investigation tied to a sexual assault allegation from December 2012. No charges had been filed as of this report. Winston’s attorney, Tim Jansen, told reporters his client is “absolutely innocent” and that the defense has given prosecutors information it believes is exculpatory.
According to TMZ, sources in the State Attorney’s Office said it was unusual that police did not update prosecutors on the case until this week. TMZ’s sources said police would typically notify them when an investigation is complete, and that Winston’s lawyer reportedly says police told him it was completed in February. TMZ said it began calling police about the case on Monday, and its sources said prosecutors were notified shortly afterward. Reports say the State Attorney’s Office received the case file on Tuesday and sent it back to police for follow up investigation.
State Attorney William Meggs said he first learned of the case this week. Tallahassee police declined to answer questions about why the case took so long to reach prosecutors.
The investigation is still open, and Winston has not been charged. We will keep you posted as officials release more information.
