Protecting a child is every parent’s first priority, but for Da Brat and her wife, Jessica “Judy” Dupart, that duty became a matter of life and death. The couple recently shared the harrowing experience of navigating fame while raising their son, True Legend, revealing that they were met with death threats after announcing that a white sperm donor was used to conceive their son.

What started as a personal family decision shared on their reality show, “Brat Loves Judy,” spiraled into a wave of online vitriol that targeted their innocent toddler.
In a recent sit-down with Chicago’s 1075 WGCI, the couple explained that the decision was rooted in medical necessity rather than a lack of pride. Dupart highlighted that genetic compatibility was the true deciding factor in their journey.
“First of all, it’s my egg,” Dupart said. “So, you have to do genetic testing where they say all of the things that you carry, you put it in the system, and then they tell you who you’re compatible with. As soon as we put in my seven things, we had no Black people available.” Dupart added that the couple “didn’t have a choice” on who to choose and that couples in a similar situation have to make “hard decisions,” emphasizing that the lack of diverse donors in the system created a narrow path for them.
The backlash eventually crossed a dangerous line, moving from simple disagreement to targeted harassment. Da Brat admitted that the intensity of the hate was overwhelming. The couple received death threats that were aimed at their son, which highlights the toxic nature of some online communities. For the Chicago native, the threats were a breaking point that required her to step away from social media to protect her peace.
“I had to stop reading, I had to stop looking at it,” she recalled. “I’m from Chicago. I will pull up.”
Despite the scary obstacles, the couple remains united in their mission to provide a safe and happy life for True Legend.
