Beyonce’s visual album Lemonade has fans online buzzing over one line in particular, a reference to “Becky with the good hair.” Beyonce does not name anyone in the project, and neither she nor Jay Z has said who, if anyone, the line is about.
Social media users have pointed to fashion designer Rachel Roy, the ex wife of Damon Dash, and some fans reacted to an Instagram post of hers that used the words “good hair.” Roy has not said she is the person people are talking about, and nothing about the speculation has been confirmed. Baller Alert is not reporting that anyone was involved in anything. It is internet chatter, and it should be treated that way.
The chatter has some history. In May 2014, TMZ published security video of Solange confronting Jay Z in an elevator after the Met Gala. Fans and bloggers have guessed at the reason for years, but the family later released a joint statement saying only that they had moved forward and were focused on family. No cause was ever confirmed.
Lemonade tells a story about betrayal and healing, and many viewers see it as personal. Beyonce has not explained which parts are autobiographical, so the meaning of any single line is up for debate. Until the people involved speak for themselves, that is all this is.
