Dolly Parton has died at 80, bringing an extraordinary career that reshaped country music and American pop culture to an end. TMZ reported Tuesday, August 25, that the singer, songwriter, and actress had died, with the outlet saying her head of security announced the news on Instagram.

The death comes after months of growing concern surrounding the star’s health. While fans often viewed her condition as something of a mystery illness because the full scope of her medical issues was never publicly detailed, Parton had disclosed several health setbacks. People reported that she experienced dizziness and dehydration, while earlier problems included kidney stones and an infection that contributed to changes in her schedule.Just four days before her death, Parton opened up about what she had been experiencing. In an August 21 interview with People, she said, “I am dealing with some health issues that I just didn’t pay attention to when I was watching over Carl.” Parton was referring to her husband, Carl Dean, who died in March 2025 after the couple spent nearly six decades together.
Her health battle had already affected several major professional commitments. Parton postponed a planned Las Vegas residency in 2025 because of health challenges before canceling the shows entirely in May 2026 while continuing treatment. Earlier this month, she also appeared by video rather than traveling to Dollywood for the opening of its NightFlight Expedition attraction after doctors advised her not to make the trip because she was dehydrated and experiencing dizziness.
Despite those setbacks, her passing arrives at a moment when the entertainer was still actively developing new projects. Days before her passing, she was working on the Life of Many Colors Museum in downtown Nashville, along with her SongTeller Hotel and other business ventures. She had also continued discussing new ways to bring her music to audiences even as her ability to travel became limited.

She won 11 Grammy Awards during her career, was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999, and entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
