Colorado quarterback Dominiq Ponder has died after a tragic early-morning crash in Boulder County, according to authorities.
Police said the crash happened around 3 a.m. Sunday, when Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3. According to the Colorado State Patrol, the vehicle lost control while navigating a curve, crossed the eastbound lane, and struck a guardrail before hitting an electrical line pole. Investigators said the car then rolled down an embankment and caught fire.
Ponder was pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation shows speed may have been a factor, though authorities said the crash remains under investigation.
The loss quickly sent shockwaves through the Colorado football program. In a statement released by the university, athletic director Fernando Lovo expressed the department’s grief.
“The entire CU Athletics family is devastated at the tragic passing of Dominiq Ponder,” Colorado athletic director Fernando Lovo said in a statement. “He epitomized the values of passion, enthusiasm, leadership, toughness, and intelligence that were revered by his teammates and coaches alike. Our hearts go out to his family and all of his teammates during this difficult time.”
Ponder was a third-year sophomore who joined Colorado after transferring from Bethune-Cookman. The Opa Locka, Florida native appeared in two games last season, recording two rushing attempts and one pass attempt.
Head coach Deion Sanders also shared a tribute online.
“Dom was one of my favorites!” Sanders wrote. “He was Loved, Respected & a Born Leader. Let’s pray for all that knew him & had the opportunity to be in his presence. Lord, you’re receiving a good 1.”

Offensive coordinator Brennan Marion described the quarterback as a joy to coach, while teammate Colton Allen remembered him as someone whose presence uplifted everyone around him.
Colorado is scheduled to begin spring practice Monday in Boulder.
