Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

Donald Trump wasted no time commenting on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation, taking to Truth Social on Monday to suggest that Canada consider merging with the United States.

“Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State,” Trump wrote sarcastically, referencing his recurring joke about Canada becoming part of the U.S. “If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”

Trudeau announced earlier on Monday that he plans to step down as prime minister once his Liberal Party selects a successor. While his resignation had been speculated for months due to declining popularity and economic challenges, Trump’s November election victory appears to have hastened the decision.

Trudeau’s tenure as Canada’s leader has faced mounting difficulties, including inflation, a housing crisis, and tensions with his own party. Trump’s threats to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian goods further heightened economic anxieties in Canada, with critics accusing Trudeau of failing to prepare for the potential fallout.

In November, Trudeau traveled to Mar-a-Lago to discuss U.S.-Canada relations with Trump, but the meeting did little to ease tensions. Trump mocked Trudeau afterward, referring to him as Canada’s “governor” and continuing to suggest that the country should become the United States’ 51st state.

Trudeau’s political troubles deepened in December when he attempted to demote his finance minister following disagreements over fiscal policies. The minister’s resignation letter criticized Trudeau’s inability to address Canada’s economic vulnerabilities, warning of a “grave challenge” in the face of a potential tariff war with the U.S.
