The driver of the Walmart truck involved in the crash that critically injured comedian Tracy Morgan and killed comedian James McNair has been charged. According to reports, the driver, Kevin, 35, of Jonesboro, Georgia, is facing one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto. Reports say he turned himself in Sunday morning and bail was set at $50,000. The charges are allegations, and he has not been convicted of anything.
New Jersey State Police said the truck struck the back of the limo bus after the driver failed to see slow moving traffic. Police said they do not believe alcohol was involved, but suspect the driver may have been dozing. Walmart released a statement saying, “This is a tragedy and we are profoundly sorry that one of our trucks was involved.”
Limo bus driver Tyrone Gale told reporters he could hear Morgan calling for help after the crash but could not reach him. Morgan suffered a broken femur, a broken nose and several broken ribs, and had surgery on his leg on Sunday. His manager Jeffrey Millea and comedian Ardie Fuqua Jr. were also listed in critical condition.
Representatives for Morgan say he is more responsive today but remains in critical condition, and he is expected to be in the hospital for several weeks. Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and with the family of James McNair.
