Beanie Sigel was arrested on gun and drug charges early Wednesday morning, just two weeks before he was supposed to report to federal prison.
Pennsylvania state troopers pulled over the car the 38 year old rapper, whose real name is Dwight Grant, was riding in on I-95 in Tinicum Township, just south of Philadelphia. Police say the driver was following another car too closely and swerving out of his lane. Sigel was in the passenger seat.
According to police, troopers found prescription pills and a small amount of marijuana on the driver. On Sigel, they say they found a bottle of codeine syrup with the label scratched off, pills wrapped in plastic and about $4,650 in cash. Troopers also found a gun in the car’s center console. Both men are convicted felons and are not allowed to have a gun.
Both now face gun and drug charges and could not post bail. When a reporter asked Sigel what happened, he said he was in his bed last night.
The timing could not be worse. Sigel was sentenced last month to two years in federal prison for failing to file his taxes. He was originally due to report this week, but a judge gave him two extra weeks so he could promote his new album, “This Time,” which came out a day before the arrest.
His label, Ruffhouse Records, said it was disappointed. Its founder said Beanie has been dealing with personal issues and that the label will keep supporting him through his prison sentence.
