Before those struggles became part of his story, West was one of the most accomplished guards in college basketball.
According to Saint Joseph’s University, West teamed with future NBA All-Star Jameer Nelson to form one of the most successful backcourts in school history. During the 2003 to 2004 season, West averaged 18.9 points as Saint Joseph’s finished 30 and 2, completed a perfect 27 and 0 regular season, reached No. 1 in the national rankings, and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
Saint Joseph’s records show West earned Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America recognition that season and finished his college career with 1,235 points.
His performance helped send him to the NBA.
According to Basketball Reference, Delonte West’s career statistics, the Boston Celtics selected West with the 24th overall pick in the first round of the 2004 NBA Draft. The Washington, D.C. native went on to play 432 regular season games across eight NBA seasons.
West suited up for the Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Dallas Mavericks. Basketball Reference lists his career averages at 9.7 points, 3.6 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game while shooting 44.8 percent from the field.
His Cleveland years placed him on teams featuring LeBron James during the Cavaliers’ repeated playoff runs. West also returned to Boston before eventually joining Dallas, where his final NBA regular season came during the 2011 to 2012 campaign.
His post-playing life eventually became far more complicated.
West publicly discussed being diagnosed with bipolar disorder during his NBA career. Mark Cuban, who helped West, noted that West disclosed the diagnosis in 2009 and had dealt with significant problems away from basketball.
Concern intensified in 2020 after images and videos circulated showing West in distress and reportedly panhandling in Texas. According to NBA.com, then Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban located West at a gas station, reunited him with his mother and helped facilitate his entry into a rehabilitation facility in Florida.
Cuban confirmed part of the intervention directly to The Washington Post, which reported on West and Cuban at the time, saying, “I can just confirm that I found him and helped him.”
The effort appeared to produce encouraging developments. West underwent treatment at a Florida rehabilitation center and eventually worked at the facility after Cuban helped connect him with treatment.
His difficulties did not end there.
ABC News reported that West was arrested in Virginia in June 2024 on misdemeanor charges involving an alleged violation of conditions of release and resisting arrest. Fairfax County police said officers found West unresponsive after a pursuit and administered Narcan before he was hospitalized. ABC News reported that he was later released from the hospital and taken to the Fairfax County Detention Center.
Those episodes are part of why West’s more recent public appearances have drawn so much attention. His story has never been limited to viral videos or troubling images. He was once a first-round NBA draft pick, a key piece of one of the greatest seasons in Saint Joseph’s basketball history, and a trusted rotation guard on multiple playoff teams.
